NORWICH – Charlotte F. Mayhood, 77, former long-time resident of Division Street, Norwich, passed away Saturday evening. Dec. 30, 2006, in the New York State Veterans' Home of Oxford, where she has made her home for the past two years.

Born June 7, 1929, in Bronxville, Charlotte was the daughter of Joseph and Frances Kirschenbaum Bauer. At the age of 7, she moved with her family to the Smyrna area, where she attended the local schools. Charlotte married Merritt "Red" Mayhood in Waverly on May 16, 1947, and, while making their home on Division Street, assisted Red in the operation of Mayhood's Bait and Tackle Shop, the business now operated by their son, Mike Mayhood. A published poet, Charlotte enjoyed reading and writing poetry in her quiet moments. Over the years, she had endured great pain due to her arthritic condition but was still very easy-going. She was a woman of great strength and was an inspiration to all, a wonderful role model for her family which meant everything to her.

Charlotte is survived by her children, her grandchildren. Also surviving are 11 great grandchildren; her brother; and her daughter-in-law along with several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband Merritt, who passed away on Jan. 8, 1990, Charlotte was predeceased by her son, Robert Mayhood, her brothers, Bernie and Joseph Bauer and her best friend for many years Naomi Blakely.

Funeral services for Charlotte will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday from the R.J. Fahy Funeral Home. The Rev. Douglas Cunningham, pastor of the Church of the Holy Apostle St. Paul and St. Bartholomew, and the Rev. Mark Thall, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Brookfield, will officiate. Interment will follow in the Mt. Hope Cemetery of Norwich.
