My great- grandfather, John Joseph Messner, was born on 22 January 1870, the first of eleven children born to Gottlieb Messner & his wife Maria Magdalena Magrum. Growing up on his father's farm in Ohio, he also became a farmer.
At the age of 24, he married Othilia (Mathilda) Missler who was 22 years old. They were married in Millersville, Sandusky County, Ohio on 24 May 1894. Tillie, as she was called, was the daughter of Peter J and Anna-Maria (Nahm) Missler, who were both German immigrants .
John Joseph & Tillie had six children, five boys & one girl:

Clara Virginia (Van Sickle) ~ 1904-1990

In about 1909 they moved from Sandusky County to Jackson County, Michigan. Together they enjoyed 56 years of marriage before Great- Grandmother's death in 1947. My Great- Grandfather, John Joseph died at the age of 80 on 29 August 1950.
My mother, Esther (whom they called Hester) enjoyed visiting both sets of grandparents on their farms. She remembered her Grandparents Messner as often speaking in German. They were staunch Catholics, stern yet loving, and very family- involved.
