MASON CITY – Walter H. Muhlstein, 97, of 501 South Kentucky, died Friday (Jan. 12, 2001) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave, Mason City, with the Rev. Kenneth Hatland officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave, Mason City, and also one hour prior to the service at the church Wednesday.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa.

Walter was born Oct 24, 1903, in Minden, Iowa, the son of Godfrey and Margaret (Krebs) Muhlstein. He attended school in Minden and moved to Rockwell at the age of 16.

Walter married Lydia Beisel on April 9, 1927, in Mason City.

Walter was employed by Jacob B. Decker & Sons Meat Packing Plant for nearly 40 years, retiring in 1968. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and enjoyed playing cards and fishing.

Walter is survived by his five children, Walter Muhlstein Jr. and his wife, Miriam, Donald Muhlstein and his wife, Sharon, Dixie Harris and her husband, Charles, Donna Meyer and her husband, Edwin, and Richard Muhlstein and his wife, Trudy, all of Mason City; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a daughter, Darlene; three brothers, Otto, William and Edward; and three sisters, Emma, Annie and Edith.
