Royce Wayne Gompert (81 y.o.) , surrounded by family, passed from this world to be with the Lord Jesus Christ on Friday June 27, 2008. Royce was born May 28, 1927 to Herman P. Gompert and Frieda Marie Thomas-Gompert in Dutch Flats, and moving to the Sunflower area in 1937. Royce attended Sunflower school and graduated in 1945. He joined the army in Dec. of 1946 and served 18 months in Guam. Upon completion of his tour duty, he returned to farm in the Sunflower area. He married Donna Pieper in 1951. They farmed in the Mitchell area until 1956 at which time they homesteaded new ground in Southern Idaho. They farmed there until 1970, at which time they moved back to Nebraska where they farmed until 1988.

They joined the Peace Corps in 1988, serving 3 years in the West Indies, then traveled to Egypt in 1991 where they worked on a potato US Aid project. After the Peace Corps they served as park hosts from 1992 to 2004.. Parks include 3 summers in Alaska, Idaho for 1 summer, and Mountain Meadow campground at Glacier National Park, Montana for 12 summers. They were also very active with Red Cross, helping with disasters both in the US and abroad. They spent the last 14 winters in Phoenix Arizona.

Royce is preceded in death by his father, Herman P. Gompert and mother, Frieda M. Thomas-Gompert. He is survived by his wife, Donna Gompert, children Kathy Compton (Colorado Springs, Colorado), Karen Perkins (Mitchell, Nebraska), Jody Gilman (Greeley, Colorado), and David Gompert (Scottsbluff, Nebraska). Grandchildren include Jason, Jerad, and Derrick Perkins, Tina Schulte, Jessica Seifert, Sadie and Cody Compton, Kelly Riddle, Amy Teets, Dustin Mitchell, and 6 great grandchildren. Royce's brothers and sisters include Betty Underberg (Oconomowoc, Wisconsin), Arvid Gompert (Scottsbluff, Nebraska), Delores Amend (Riverton, Wyoming), Shirley Fonken (Las Cruces, New Mexico), Daryl Gompert (Burwell, Nebraska), and Leon Gompert (Phoenix, Arizona).

Services to celebrate Royce's life will be held in the Mitchell Berean Church on August 1st at 5:00 PM. A memorial has been established to The Easy Bleeder Woodcarving Group located in the park where they resided in Arizona. Donations may be sent in care of Donna Gompert at 5818 West 16th St. Ln, Greeley, CO, 80634. We welcome you write down any special memories that you have of Royce and bring to the services.
