Former Brewer Dies

George H. Osterfeld Was President

Of Mohawk Brewing Company


George H. Osterfeld, 64 years old, President of the Mohawk Brewing Company and for 38 years prominent in the manufacture of beer, died yesterday at Bethesda Hospital after an illness of three years.

Mr. Osterfeld's condition was not thought to be serious until several weeks ago. Less than two weeks ago was removed to the hospital, where he was operated upon. His condition was so weakened that he failed to rally from the operation.

Mr. Osterfeld began his career in the brewing business with his father, the late August Osterfeld, founder of the old Bellevue Brewery and a Director at the Brighton Bank. Shortly before prohibition Mr. Osterfeld bought Sohn Brewing Company and changed the name to Mohawk Brewing Company.

He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Cuvier Press Club and the Blaine Club. He was associated in business with his brother Joseph Osterfeld.

Funeral services will be conducted at his home, 3660 Kendall Avenue, Hyde Park, Friday morning and will be followed by Requiem High Mass at Holy Angels Church.

Besides his brother, Mr. Osterfeld is survived by his widow, Mrs. Lillian Buhr Osterfeld; four children, Misses Margaret, Mary and Ruth Osterfeld, and George Osterfeld, Jr. two sisters, Mrs. M.J. Sprengurd, and Mrs. Frank Gering, and another brother, Harry Osterfeld, Chicago.
