In 1898 the family immigrated to the United States. They departed from Antwerp, Belgium on December 8th, 1898. The ship’s name was the S.S. Adria which arrived in New York Harbor on December 23rd. They went to Aberdeen, South Dakota and lived there until coming to North Dakota in the spring of 1900. Peter and Elizabeth homesteaded 160 acres of land in Gorman Township, McHenry County. They lived on their farm until moving in with their son Nicholas prior to their deaths. Peter passed away at the age of 76 on September 3, 1925 and Elizabeth passed away at the age of 82 on December 8, 1929.
