Born Jan. 16, 1904, in East Peoria to Charles F. and Rosie Hoeffner Messer, he married Bernice Treharne on May 14, 1924, in Washington. She died Dec. 15, 1982, in Peoria.
Two sons, Ralph and Richard, one great-grandchild, three brothers and six sisters also preceded him in death.
Surviving are two sons, David of East Peoria and George of Lebanon, Mo.; one daughter, Mrs. Michael (Barbara) Duke of East Peoria; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
He opened Messer Autobody in East Peoria in 1945, which he operated until retiring in 1982.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Remmert Funeral Home in East Peoria. The Rev. Steve Weber will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fondulac Cemetery.
