Michael Joyce was born in County Galway, Ireland, and came to the United States as a young man, settling for a few years in Clinton, Massachusetts. It was there that he married Catherine Finnerty, also an Irish immigrant, and between 1855 and 1857 moved his family to Wisconsin. In 1884, the family moved to South Dakota.
