An immigrant from Germany, Mathew Edel settled in Haverhill in 1883, where he built a blacksmith shop and a house behind. Edel was an entrepreneur, operating a successful business as a blacksmith, farrier (shoed horses and cared for their hooves), inventor, and manufacturer. He produced most of his own tools. Among his inventions on display in his shop are a dehorning clipper (which he patented), a wedge cutter, nut pliers, garden hoes, and iron cemetery crosses.
During World War I, Edel added an automobile service garage to the west end of the blacksmith shop. When he died, his family closed the shop, but left it intact until they donated it to the State of Iowa in 1986. It is now owned and managed by the State Historical Society of Iowa, and remains a rare example of an authentic 19th-century blacksmith shop.
