Martha was born to David and Polly (Cunningham) Morris. In early youth she, with her family came to Kansas and settled in Anderson County.
November 27, 1856, she was united in marriage to Barnett Ashburn, taking up their residence at Elwood, Doniphan county, Kansas. To this union four children were born, two preceding her in death. In November 1863, she suffered the loss of her husband.
In 1874 she was united in marriage to John Floyd Cummings. To this union five children were born; three of whom preceded her in death - Viola, Claude and George Thomas Cummings.
She leaves to mourn her loss, one daughter and three sons, namely Mrs. Mahala Cox; Ezekiel W. Ashburn; William Harvey Cummings; and Edward D. Cummings. Also thirty-two grand children and fifteen great grandchildren.
