Esther I. Rieken, 80, of Wellsburg, died December 4 at Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls. Funeral services were December 6 at St. Peter's United Church of Christ. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Esther was born June 4, 1923, in rural Ackley, daughter of John and Anna (Oelmann) Kappel. She was raised near Ackley and on November 18, 1944, was united in marriage to Lester Rieken at St. Peter's United Church of Christ. She was a homemaker and farm wife, living on the family farm located five miles north of Wellsburg for most of her adult life.

Esther was a member of St. Peter's where she was involved with various women's groups and she spent several years serving as youth leader with her husband Lester. Esther was very artistic and enjoyed working with ceramics and painting.

She is survived by her son, Duane (Kristen) Rieken of Ackley; brother, Robert (Beverly) Kappel of Ackley; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester; her parents; sisters, Sophie Bartling, Ann Bohlman and Nettie Bohlman; and brothers, Wallace, George and Hannis Kappel.
