She was born Jan. 23, 1925 in Georgetown, the daughter of Charles and Ruth (Biggs) Sheppard. She was married to Burley Penninger Dec. 9, 1944 in Portsmouth, Virginia. He survives.
Other survivors include her son, Michael Penninger.; her daughter, Penny (Jack) Sweeney; four grandchildren and her sister, Norma (Jack) Scott.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; her son, Larry; her brother, Charles and her four sisters, Ruth, Betty, Dorothy and Sarah.
Alena worked for Western Auto in Westville for 20 years. She enjoyed ceramics, needle point, painting and collecting dolls.
