Michael was the son of Jacob & Catherine Margarette (Amos) Steitz. Michael emigrated from Germany in 1854 living first near Albany, NY, where he earned a living as a gardener. There he met and was married to Margaret Knapp in 1855. Michael & Margaret parented three children between the years of 1861 & 1864: Conrad Steitz, Katherine Steitz, & Margaret "Maggie" Steitz. The Michael Steitz family then moved to Delaware County, OH, in 1865 whereupon wife Margaret soon became ill and died. On January 29, 1866, Michael was married to Fredericka Kirchner, a fellow German immigrant. Michael & Fredericka parented three children between the years of 1867 & 1872: Fredericka "Rick" Steitz, Charles Steitz, & Elizabeth Steitz. Michael then built a large house in Liberty Township, Delaware County, OH, along what has come to be known as Steitz Road. Michael earned a living there by farming, sawing lumber, horse trading, and operating an apple cider press. In most of these enterprises, Michael operated in partenership with two of his brothers, Jacob Steitz & John Steitz, who both lived adjacent to Michael and who are both also buried at Oak Grove Cemetery. Michael also had a sister who emigrated from Germany & is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery: Catherine Steitz.
