Death claimed Peter J. Emmer, respected resident of this city, Thursday night, Jan 21, after a pain racking illness lasting since last Thanksgiving. He suffered from complication of diseases affecting the lungs and his throat, which first made themselves felt last June. When his condition became more serious, he gave up working on December 12, taking to his bed late in the same month.Mr Emmer, who was nearly 62 years of age, was born in Aspach, France Feb 22, 1864. When a lad of 17, he accompanied his father, the late John Emmer, to this country. His mother died when he was nine years old. Hartford was the family's destination; and here the boy follow his father's trade, that of a tanner, working for Uber Tannery. After three years, he left for Minnesota, where he divided several years among places as a farm hand. On September 21, 1892, married Miss Martha Bade of St Paul, with whom he returned to Hartford. This city was to be his home the rest of his life, and here he followed the occupation of a tanner, being employed for a ling time at Ubers, and later at Places. It was on;y last June that he forsook this trade to become a gatemanat Kissels.He was the father of eight children. Of these, his eldest son, Herbert, died at the age of 10 months, the rest survive him as follows: Harvey, Harold, Arthur, Alfred of Hartford, Alma (Mrs Archie Bottomae), Milwaukee, and Roland and Lillian of Hartford. He also leaves his wife, one sister, Mrs Christ Rodewaldt of this city, and seven grandchildren. His aged father, with whom he came as a lad from Germany, died January 20, 1925, just a year and one day preceding his son.Truly devoted to his family and possessing a strong and sturdy sense of duty, Mr Emmer won the respect of all with whom he was associated.Shortly after his return to Hartford he joined the fire department. He served a membership with this organization for more that 30 years, and retained it until his death. His brother firemen showed their confidence in him by electing him treasurer for many years in succession. His last election to this office occured only 2 weeks before he was taken. He also belonged to the Krankenunterstizungverein society.Funeral services were held fro him at his residence on Grand Avenue Sunday afternoon at two o'clock with burial following at Union Cemetery. The services were conducted in English by Rev A. Von Rohr. The men's quartet of Peace Lutheran Church rendered two beautiful selections, one a German number, and the other the well known English Hymn, Nearer My God to Thee.
