MRS. ANNA ROLFS DEAD. Mother of Mrs. John Groth Passes Away at 94 Years. Funeral Held Yesterday Afternoon.

Mrs. Anna Rolfs, mother of Mrs. John Groth, died at the Groth home Monday morning, following a prolonged illness. Her death was due to old age.

Mrs. Rolfs, who formerly lived in Everly, Iowa, first began to fail while still there several months ago, and for a time Mrs. Groth remained with her. She regained her strength sufficiently to be able to come to Remsen, and this spring came here to spend her remaining days in the home of her daughter. For a number of weeks she was confined to the sick room, and although she received the best of care her advanced age was against her and she waged a losing fight.

The deceased was 94 years old. She was born in Tetenhusen, Schleswig, Germany, July 22, 1829. She received her education at Kopp, at which place she was also confirmed in the Lutheran church. In 1859 she was united in marriage to John Tim Rolfs. For over fifty years this couple was privileged to live together and mutually to share joy and sorrow, poverty and wealth. Their golden wedding anniversary was celebrated at the home of their daughter, Mrs. Groth, in 1909. Some years after this Mr. Rolfs died. Since then Mrs. Rolfs has lived with her children, first at Everly, and lately in Remsen.

Mr. and Mrs. Rolfs came to the United States in 1868 and settled in Davenport, Iowa. Two years later they moved to the vicinity of Luverne, where they farmed for ten years, enduring the hardships of pioneer struggles. Subsequently they lived near Dysert and Keystone, Iowa. From 1893 to 1903 they lived in Remsen, but moved to Everly, which was Mrs. Rolfs' home until recently.

Those mourning the death of this estimable lady are her children: Mrs. Catherine Moller, Everly; Mrs. Groth, Remsen; John Rolfs, Everly; Henry Rolfs, Hartwig, Minn., and Mrs. Wm. Peters, Pipestone, Minn. Two children passed away many years ago. Thirty-seven grandchildren and 52 great grand children, besides other relatives and many friends are filled with grief at the passing away of this good woman.

The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, services being held at the Groth home and conducted by Rev. A. Noack, pastor of Christ Lutheran church. Interment was made in the Remsen cemetery. – Remsen Bell-Enterprise, 8/2/1911, page 1, column 3
