BLOCK BROS.' NEW BUILDING
We present a small, but very neat and exact picture of the stone building erected by Block & Bro., the well known and popular grocers, on East Fourth street. The building is 25x100 feet, 3 stories and basement and from its artistic has attracted much attention and admiration since its completion.
The front is of Carthage stone and has a large plate glass show window, giving good light, and the entire building is constructed of the very best material and shows only good workmanship.
The inside finish is complete in all particulars, the ceiling being of steel plate and painted in appropriate tasteful colors.
At the rear end is an elevator for carrying goods from one story to another, also stairways and other conveniences needed.
Messrs. Bissell and Rose, of this city were the architects and builders. Mr. N. E. Bolle did the stone work and showed much artistic skill in the carved figures and faces in the center and above and between the windows on the second story. Mr. Al Brewer laid the brick, James Badgley did the plastering and T. S. Bell the painting.
The building cost, when completed, nearly $7,000 and is an ornament to the city as well as being very useful.
Mose and Jacob Block started in business in this city, a few doors west of their present location in 1871, or twenty-one years ago, in a rented store, and by honorable dealing and close attention to business have prospered and became well and favorably known.
They bought the lot upon which their new building is located in 1873, and in 1874 built a frame two story store, which is now located at the rear of the new one or on Fifth street. Mr. Sigmond Block, a young nephew, has been with them several years and is known as a very efficient and capable clerk, being entrusted with much of the firm.

DEATH OF SIGMUND BLOCK
WELL KNOWN BUSINESS MAN DIES VERY SUDDENLY

For Many Years He Was Engaged in Grocery Business Here - Funeral Tomorrow

Sigmund Block, who was one of the best known business men of this city, died at 12:22 o'clock yesterday morning in his home at 321 West Third street, after an illness of only 20 minutes of acute indigestion, which affected the heart.
Mr. Block was alone in his home when he suddenly became seriously sick and he stopped some men passing along the street and had them summon his brother Alex Block. A doctor speedily was summoned and medical attention was given him, but all in vain.
Mrs. Block was visiting her mother in Kansas City when her husband died. Word was gotten to her as quickly as possible and she reached home on the first train. Their only son, Louis Block, who is a student in the state university in Columbia, reached Carthage this morning.
Mr. Block was thought to be in excellent physical condition, though he was in poor health some months ago and on that account temporarily retired from active business, but was so fully recovered that he had planned to go into business again. Mrs. Block is almost prostrated as a result of her husband's death.
Mr. Block, who was 51 years old July 31, was born in Vechta, Germany. He came to America when he was 17 years old, coming direct to Carthage, where he became affiliated with his uncles, Moses and Jacob Block, who were conducting the Block Brothers' Grocery. Later Mr. Block and his brother, Alex Block, succeeded their uncles int he business and the first store was run under the same name until just a few months ago, when the business was closed out. Within the last few weeks the two brothers had organized the Block Fruit, Produce & Commission Company, Sigmund Block being the president of the company and they were to have opened for business within a very short time.
He also was formerly general manager of the Astra Products Company, in which he was one of the heavy stockholders. He retired from that concern last November.
Mr. Block was prominent in the K. P. lodge, having been master of finances in that order when he died. He also was a member of the *U. C. T. lodge of this city, having attended a meeting of that organization Saturday night, returning home only about an hour before he was seized with his fatal illness.
In 1895 Mr Block was married to Miss Minnie Kingsbaker, of Sedalia. The wife and one son, Louis Block, survive. Moses Block, an uncle and two brothers, Alex and Simon Block, reside in this city. The father, three brothers and two sisters reside in Germany.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow from the Block residence. Rabbi Leiser, of Joplin, will be in charge. Fraternal order ceremonies will be conducted by the K. P. lodge at the grave. Burial will be in Park Cemetery. (bio by NJBrewer)
