He served in the US Coast Guard (1942-1946); and the US Marine Corps (1946-1952). He was a graduate of Gallagher's Business College and Benjamin Franklin University (now George Washington University). He worked for the US Navy Department for more than 20 years.

He was predeceased by his parents, Robert Thomas Amermanand Dora Margaret "Dollie" Compton Amerman; and his wife, Betty Margaret Mink. He was survived by a son; a sister; and a niece and nephew.

Interment on January 8, 2008.
