ERNEST D. KEYL, 64, DIES TUESDAY NIGHT
Was Teacher, Salesman and Musician.
Ernest D. Keyl died Tuesday night, at the family residence, 1365 North Clinton street. He was sixty-four years old last August. His death was due to a complication of diseases. He had been in failing health for a long time. Unable to get relief by medical treatment, as a last resort he submitted to a surgical operation two months ago, but that failed to relieve him.
TAUGHT SCHOOL, MANY YEARS
Mr. Keyl was well known in many parts of the country as a teacher, as a traveling salesman and as a musician. He played the violin exceptionally well. he was born in Baltimore, Md., Aug. 14, 1857. He was a son of Rev. and Mrs. W. H. Keyl and his early training was with the idea of devoting his life to the educational department of the Lutheran church, with which his family had long been associated. He attended the public schools in Wittenberg, Mo., and at the age of nineteen he graduated from Addison college.
For three years he taught in the public school in Wittenberg, Mo., and then received a call to New Orleans, La. There he was located for eighteen years. Then he went to Mt. Olive, Ill., and taught there for thirteen years. From there he went to Battle Creek, Neb., but after two years in the schools there his health failed and he found it necessare to be more in the open air.
CAME TO DECATUR
He brought his family to Decatur and took a year's rest. Then for five years he was associated with his brother, G. C. Keyl, in the cracker business. As a salesman he visited all the neighboring towns and became well known to the merchants in central Illinois. His health improved and he again felt able to take up his work as a teacher. He accepted a call to St. Johannes school, but after one term his old trouble returned and he had to give up teaching.
Mr. Keyl and Miss Lena Debus were married in St. Louis July 12, 1883. He was devoted to his family and they were equally devoted to him. He is survived by his wife and the following children: Mrs. William Koschesa, Mrs. Len Behrns, Mrs. Ada Augustine, Miss Eleanor keyl, Ernest Keyl and Edgar Keyl, all of Decatur, and Rev. Otto Keyl of Platte Center, Neb. He is also survived by his brother G. C. Keyl, and the following sisters: Mrs. Julia Glaeser of Woodhaven, N.Y., Mrs. Marie Koerner of Brooklyn, N.Y., Mrs. Agnes Germann of Utica, N.Y., and Mrs. P. F. Germann of Decatur.
