Maryalyce Hale Shaffer, 86, of Vandergrift, died peacefully Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008, in her residence. Born Jan. 26, 1922, in Freeport, she was a daughter of the late Stuart and Mary Alice Hale, and had lived in Parks Township and Vandergrift most of her life. She was a member of Holy Innocents Episcopal Church in Leechburg. During World War II, she had worked at the Glen L. Martin Airplane Co., and did volunteer work at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, both in Baltimore. She later worked at the Uncapher Agency in Vandergrift as a secretary prior to retiring. Maryalyce loved taking care of her home, reading, traveling, especially to Scotland, and loved history of England. She loved having tea parties for the children. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Shaffer; and a brother, Master Sgt. Thomas W. Hale. She is survived by her sister, Doris Hale (Robert) Bettleyon, of Bel Air, Md.; her nieces, Jeanne Hale Wiczulis, of Bel Air, Md., who she considered her own, Pamela (Larry) Burns, of Texas, and Grace Coy, of Illinois; four great-nieces, Lisa, Tracie, Shawna and Beth; a great-nephew, Rick; six great-great-nieces; two great-great-nephews; and her young neighborhood friends, Jason Kerr, Jaret Kerr, Jamie Hallstrom, and her most loving young friend, Jordy Kerr. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the DUNMIRE-KERR FUNERAL HOME, Vandergrift. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Holy Innocents Episcopal Church, Leechburg, with Father Gary Miller officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Memorial, Lower Burrell.
