After arriving in the United States, this Germa immigrtant began using the name Charles or Charlie (Charley) On his marriage record in 1866, he was listed as Karl. He is listed on his daughter Louisa's death certificate as Charlie.

He was born in August of 1839 in Ohnholz, Jagstkreis, Wurttemburg, Germany. The month and year are taken from the 1900 Census. The exact date is unknown at this time. His parents were Johann Ludwig Heinrich Obenland and his wife, Anna Maria Kronmueller.

The 1900 Census also states that both Charles Obenland and he future wife, Fredericke Bernecker immigrated to the United States in 1865. Any other information regarding their arrival in the U.S is unknown at this time. Whether Charles and Friedericke knew each other in Germany, met on the ship or met here in New York is also unknown.

On May 20, 1866 Charles married Fredericke Pauline Bernecker in New York, New York. The marriage certificate is #216. They were married by a Lutheran Pastor whose name is not legible on the certificate. The witnesses to the marriage were Johannes Michel and Paul H. Gnatz. On the marriage license, Charles listed his occupation as a miller.

Charles and Freda had eight children but only 5 lived. They were: Anna Juliana (Julia, sometimes called Lilly), Charles, Louisa, Frederike Anna (Freda) and Gustave.

In the 1880 Census, the family was living at 316 E. 47th Street, in New York City. Charles was working in a brewery. By 1900, the family had moved to Neptune Avenue in Brooklyn. Charles listed his occupation in 1900 as "hotel." Whether he owned a hotel or was employed at one, we don't know.

In the 1910 Census, Charles and his wife were retired and living at 110 Neptune Ave. in Brooklyn. Charles was 70 and his wife was 65.

Charles passed away on September 26, 1910 and was buried in Green-Wood Cemetery two days later. In 1920, his wife, Fredericka, is listed living with their daughter, Frieda and her second husband, Jack Walsh.

Note: His death certificate, #19319 lists his last name as Oberlind, as does his burial record at Green-Wood Cemetery.
