Mr. Cahill was an Irish immigrant who had lived in Augusta for eleven years at the time of his death. He was a laborer for the city of Augusta, working on the canal bridge construction.

On July 29th, nine year old Dallas Corine Kitchens fell into the water. Mr. Cahill dove in in an attempt to save her and drowned in the process.

On february 21, 2009, a new marker was placed for him in Magnolia Cemetery by the Ancient Order of Hibernians-Richmond District I.

Dennis Cahill was a considered a 'local hero' at the time for his sacrifice.
