Bertha married William Eickhoff on January 9, 1890 in Welcome. He was killed in a logging accident on Jan 31, 1899, leaving Bertha with four small children to rear.

William Haevischer was working for Christoph Thielemann whose wife was a relation to Bertha. Christoph sent William to help Bertha do chores around the house. The visits resulted in the marriage of William and Bertha on Dec 10, 1903. They subsequently reared five additional children.

Bertha was a diabetic, before there were treatments for the disease. She died of a coronary occlusion.
