Percival Taylor Gates Jr., known as "Val", born June 8, 1928, married, January 2, 1954 in Rochester, Monroe County, NY, Mary Louise Pearse. She was born in Rochester, NY, February 19, 1929, daughter of Herman Elwyn and Mary Louise (Mall) Pearse. They were divorced in 1983.

Val Gates graduated Magna Cum Laude from Brown University in 1950 and received a Master's Degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1958. He was an F-86 jet pilot during the Korean War and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for acts of valor in combat. He was a talented design engineer and worked for EG & G in Boston, MA before starting his own consulting business in 1971 in Rockport, Knox County, ME. He was active in community affairs and was an early volunteer for hospice care, eventually serving as president of Maine Hospice. He spent a year teaching in Syktyvkar, Russia for "Bridges for Peace", an international organization to help Russia's transition to a free market economy. Mr. Gates was an active member of the Libertarian Party and served as one of the four Maine Presidential Electors for Harry Browne in both the 1996 and 2000 campaigns. He described himself as a "Constitutionalist" and believed the Libertarian Party was the best advocate of his beliefs.

He died of bone-marrow cancer, February 5, 2001, at his home in Penobscot Shores, Belfast, Waldo County, ME. In his obituary he was described as a soft-spoken gentleman with a dignified bearing, generous, kind and thoughtful.
