Fran spent her life as a homemaker.
In her later years she suffered from bi-polar depression and died from an overdose of sleeping pills. She died on 11 Feb 1978 just eight months before her husband's death. Her body was cremated and the ashes were spread along with Percy's in the Fox Island thoroughfare, Vinalhaven Island, Maine, off their summer home called "Yonderhill".
