Born Dorathea M. Kortum - but inscribed Dorothy on her headstone. Some records show her name as "Doris".
Born in Hohn, Holstein, Germany, she was the daughter of Frederick "Fritz" and Helene Magdeline "Laura" (Orsbor) Kortum.
At the age of 20, Dorathea immigrated to America, arriving in Davenport, Iowa April 22, 1872.
She married Christof Ernst January 24, 1874.
They raised their seven children - Annie, Adella, Charlie, Rudolph, Julius, Clara and Edna on their farm four miles west of Schleswig.
