Born in Hohn, Holstein, Germany, she was the daughter of Frederick "Fritz" and Helene Magdeline "Laura" (Orsbor) Kortum.
At the age of 20, Dorathea immigrated to America, arriving in Davenport, Iowa April 22, 1872.
She married Christof Ernst January 24, 1874.
They raised their seven children - Annie, Adella, Charlie, Rudolph, Julius, Clara and Edna on their farm four miles west of Schleswig.

"Mrs. Ernst was one of the oldest settlers of this community and endured all the hardships of the early pioneers. She was a thoughtful and loving wife and mother, and her thoughts and wishes were always for those whom she loved best."
Dorathea was one of six children born to Fritz and Laura.
