With no relatives in America and only 20 years old, Christof, the second child born to Hans Jurgen and Catherine Margareta "Maggie" (Wedemeyer) Ernst, set out on his own to be the very first branch of the Wedemeyer and Ernst families to immigrate to America, leaving behind his parents and four siblings, Frederick, Peter, Anna and Henerich "Henry", most of whom would eventually follow in his footsteps and immigrate to America.

When Christof first immigrated to America from Sprengel, Hanover, Germany, he took up residence in Davenport, Iowa, eventually meeting and marrying Dorathea M. Kortum there.
They were married January 24, 1874 and farmed for a few years in Scott County, moving to Schleswig in 1880, where they would spend the remainder of their life.

Their seven children were:
Erna Louise "Annie" Ernst (Adam Krohnke);
Adelia Ernst (Henry Laumbach);
Charles "Charlie" Ernst (Annie Heersh);
Rudolph Ernst (Helen Linda Paulsen);
Julius Ernst 9Anna Laumbach);
Clara Ernst (Gustav Mohr)'
Edna Ernst (Wilhelm Stender)
