He was baptized in Holy Baptism March 16, 1851 and confirmed as a member of the German Reformed Church of Grand Prairie near Olney on December 22, 1867, C. G. Feutz, pastor.
He came to the United States with his father's family in 1857, first settling near Scotland, Greene Co., Indiana. Later in 1864 the family moved to this county, settling on land three miles east of Olney very near his late home. He followed the quiet life of an industrious farmer.
He was married October 24, 1885, to Miss Elizabeth Atkins of Auburn, New York, whom he met while she was here teaching school, and who survives him.
Four children were born to this union, one daughter died in infancy, a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Carlson of Lac Pelletier Saskatchewan, Canada, a son Henry Balmer of Longmont, Colorado, and a daughter, Mrs. Joyce Newton of Blumenhof, Saskatchewan, Canada, survive him.
He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Hostettler, of Olney, Ill., and Mrs. Mattie Bailey of San Pedro, Calif., one brother, John Balmer of Sumner, Ill.
Two brothers, Fred and Henry, and two sisters, Margaret Myer and Anna Schilt preceded him to the better land.
He also leaves seven grandchildren.
One granddaughter Sophia Carlson preceded him in death.
The funeral was held at the home at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, with Rev. Enoch Smith officiating.
Burial was made at Haven Hill.
