Pastor emeritus Carl Adam Germann. - On March 17 the Lord graciously called this able and faithful servant to his eternal reward. Born November 22, in Van Wert County, O., the son of George and Maria Hoffmann Germann, members of one of the oldest congregations in our Synod, he entered the practical department of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Mo., in 1869 and was graduated four years later. His first charge was at Peru, Ind., where he laid the foundation for the now flourishing St. John's Church. In 1883 he accepted a call to Trinity Church, Utica, NY For thirty-seven years he was in active service in this congregation, until 1920, when he retired. and was to continue as honorary pastor for twelve years.
On October 12, 1873, Pastor Germann was united in holy wedlock with Agnes M. Keyl, daughter of Pastor EGW Keyl, former President of the Eastern District, then living in Monroe, Mich. This union was blessed with five children, the oldest of whom preceded him into eternity. His faithful helpmate was taken from him by death in 1924.
At the funeral service, held in Trinity Church, Utica, March 21, hundreds of friends and former parishioners viewed the body as it lay in state before the service. Pastor Theo. Kuehn of Rome, NY, delivered the German address, and the undersigned spoke words of comfort in English. The Rev. G. Albert Schulze of Albany represented the Atlantic District, and five pastors of the Albany Pastoral Conference acted as honorary pall-bearers. The interment took place in Forest Hill Cemetery, Utica. Pastor Germann leaves to mourn his departure four children: Albert W., Mrs. Emma A. Wiegel, Gerhardt S., and Oscar F. Germann ; seven grandchildren, one of whom is the Rev. Milton G. Kuolt, missionary to India, at present on furlough in the United States; and six great-grandchildren. The autobiography of our sainted father Germann, written but two months prior to his death, concludes with these words: "And when finally the hour comes that I must depart out of this world, my last prayer shall be: - "I fall asleep."."
