Rolland "Rollie" Studer, age 84, of Delta, passed away Easter morning, April 12, 2009, at Defiance Inpatient Hospice. He was born in Whitehouse, OH on May 6, 1924, to the late Edwin Studer and Bernice (Wilson) Studer. Rollie graduated as Valedictorian from Whitehouse High School in 1942 where he played football, baseball and basketball for all four years. He was a WWII veteran having served with the US Army from 1943 - 1946 with the #202 Engineer Company B; from which he received a Purple Heart and was honored for help constructing a pontoon bridge in record time of six hours and twenty minutes, while under enemy fire. The bridge was 1152 feet long, which was the longest in that short of time. During his time with the Army he played football as a fullback against other military teams and went 5-2 with very little time for preparation and limited plays. To this day the #202 Engineer Company still meet as a group every June for a reunion and stay acquainted. Rollie worked for Allied Chemical, formerly Plaskon before his retirement. He was a lifelong farmer who respected the Earth that God had given us by farming and gardening organically. Two of his favorite hobbies were fishing and hunting. Rollie was a Sunday school teacher and trustee with the former Raker Church in Delta. He was a member of the Delta United Methodist Church and the Delta American Legion Post #373. Rollie was preceded in death by his daughter, Nancy Panning in 1978; granddaughter, Kellie Studer; brother, Leslie Studer and sister, Norma Rearick. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Wilma (Frost) Studer; children, Marcia (Bob) Ricker and Gene (Linda) Studer; brothers, Leon (Neva), James, Walter (Sharon), Alan (Sandra) and John (Kay) Studer; sister, Wilma (Raymond) Porter; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, Chris Weirauch, Chelsea Demoulin, Karsyn and Keagyn Gillen. Friends may call 2-8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at Barnes Funeral Chapel, 5825 St Hwy 109 in Delta. A funeral service celebrating Rolland's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at Delta United Methodist Church, 101 Northwood Dr., Delta Ohio 43515. Pastor Bill Bauman will be officiating. Interment will follow at Raker Cemetery in Delta.
