Salvatore A. Mazzarella, a longtime Riverdale (Bronx) resident and middle school teacher, died on January 7, 2009 at New-York Presbyterian/Columbia's Millstein Family Heart Center. He passed away from respiratory and heart failure and was 64 years old.

Mr. Mazzarella, the son of the late Salvatore and Pasqualina Mazzarella, grew up in the Bronx. He graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School and went on to attend Manhattan College. Afterward, he earned two master's degrees in engineering and education at New York University.

For 25 years, Mr. Mazzarella taught at John Philip Sousa Middle School (J.H.S. 142/M.S. 142) on Baychester Avenue in the Edenwald section of the Bronx, teaching math and also serving as the school's dean of students. He retired in 1999, after his health began to fail.

Mr. Mazzarella, who was known affectionately as "Sally," nurtured a number of hobbies, including cooking, playing the guitar and practicing Tai Kwon Do. He picked up the martial art when he was a teenager and earned the status of third-degree black belt.

He also taught a class on Tai Kwon Do in Manhattan.

Mr. Mazzarella is survived by his wife of 24 years, Roseanne, of Riverdale; his son Salvatore Mazzarella,Jr., of Riverdale; his sister Louise Barlanti of Yonkers; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
