She was a nurse and Thomas was a weaver. They moved several times after their marriage, due to hard times in the country. Finally they settled in Dalry, Scotland , in 1841 , where Thomas became a miner. In 1849 they heard the missionaries. Mary became converted and went home and told her husband, and they were both baptized. They were determined to emigrate to the Valley. By 1855 they were able to set sail for America with all their children. Thomas and his boys worked where they could to get the money to continue their journey. While they were in Omaha , Brigham Young appointed Thomas to learn the Indian language and be an interpreter for the saints as they were crossing the plains. By the time they finally arrived in Salt Lake in 1859 , Thomas was very ill with Mountain Fever Mary and the boys tried to find work to get the food they needed. They lived in a wagon box until 1860 , when they moved to Franklin, Idaho , where Thomas grew flax. He also purchased some sheep. With the wool he made fine linens and other things needed by the pioneers. In 1868 , they moved to Hooper, Utah , where their children lived. Thomas acquired some cows and they made and sold butter and cheese. After Mary died, Thomas remarried three times. He died in Weston, Idaho , where he was living with his daughter.
