Martin came to Humphreys County, TN between 1800 and 1814 with the James Cooley family. he married Nancy Cooley, daughter of James and Penelope Gargus Cooley and had 16(?) children. The story is told in the family that Martin was 101 years old when he broke his hip while "ice skating". According to the handed-down story, Martin and a few others were on the ice and had broken a hole to allow some geese access to the water. One goose dove under and ended up under the ice and could not find the hole. Martin attempted to break another hole with an axe for the goose to escape, when he slipped and fell. His health quickly deteriorated afterward and he died. Martin and Nancy Cooley Carter were my 4th Great Grandparents.
