Marie Burri or Buri was born September 10, 1844 in Schupfen, Bern, Switzerland, to Rudolf Burri (b. 1806) and Katharine Rothen (b. 1810). She was the eighth child in a family of ten children. There were six girls and four boys: Anna born 1831, Rosina 1833, Niklaus 1835, Elizabeth 1837-died one day later, Rudolf 1838-died three months later, Elizabeth 1840, Rudolf 1842, Marie 1844, Thomas 1846-died at age seven) and Anna born 1848.

Marie married Jacob Metzener (or Metzner) 13 May 1871. She was 27 years old. The couple had eight children: Maria born 1872, Jacob 1873, Fredrick 1875-died same month, Roxina 1877, Bertha 1879, Gottfried 1882-died two months later, Anna 1882 and twin of Gottfried, and Kasper born 1887-died same month.

Their eldest daughter, Maria, was born with one leg shorter than the other, but with persistance and patience and the loving care of her mother, she learned to walk and run without a limp.

Jacob, Marie and their children had a nice home with a small acreage. Marie and her children worked the soil and had wonderful gardens. They also raised livestock for their use. They were considered prosperous.

In the late summer of 1889 two Elders from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints brought the message of the restoration to Marie and Jacob. Jacob was baptized 26 Jan 1890 and Marie and her son, Jacob Jr were baptized 28 Mar 1890. Other children By May 1891 several more family members had been baptized. This brought ostracizism which affected Jacob's business. They decided to send their daughter Maria and son Jacob Jr to join the saints in Salt Lake valley. They wrote their parents about the advantages of living with the saints and of the opportunities for homesteading.

Jacob and Marie's daughter and son, Maria and Jacob Jr., first traveled by boat and train to Salt Lake City to join with members of their new found faith. Eventually, the rest of the family came to the United States though Rosa stayed for a while in Switzerland with Jacob senior's sister. After several months in Salt Lake City, most of the family traveled on to Eagle Rock, Idaho (now Idaho Falls). In Grant, they homesteaded land, built a small log home, cleared sagebrush and planted crops. A few years later, Jacob Sr moved his family to another 80 acres on the Lewisville highway. He built a two story red brick home for Marie and planted trees around it. They remained faithful to their chosen faith to the end.

Marie died at age 69, 6 Feb 1913, her husband two years later 21 Jul 1915 at age 67. They left a rich heritage for their large posterity. She was buried in Grant Central Cemetery initially and later her remains were removed to Rose Hill Cemetery in Idaho Falls along with other graves in the origianl plot.
