Gottlieb Gehring, son of Johann Gehring and Katherina (Krams) came to the United States with his parents on March 11, 1898 and settled in the area around Ashley, North Dakota. Maria Scharf and Gottlieb met and were married at Fredonia, North Dakota on February 20, 1902. Maria and her husband moved to Ashley, ND where they filed another homestead that was still possessed by them in 1948. In 1907, they moved to Wishek, ND which was a town in its infancy. They watched Wishek grow and Gottlieb commenced working on the Soo Line Railroad shortly after his marriage. He also worked for John Rath who had a Dray and Transfer business at that time. Maria was employed at the Sheridan House for some time. Having no children of their own, they adopted a baby girl from Rosena Krenzler to whom twins were born. Alma Marie was baptized on April 3, 1910 in the St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Wishek. Their daughter died on March 23, 1937.
