He was the son of John and Susannah Keeler Sell, of near Newville, Cumberland County, PA. He married (1) Frances Marie Rice in 1838. He attended Gettysburg College 1845-1849. He graduated from the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg in 1851.From that time on he served Pennsylvania Lutheran churches in Rossville (1851-1853), Berryville (1853-1860), Lock Haven (1860-1862), Aaronsburg (1862-1865), Pine Grove Mills 1865-1869), Loysville 1869-1872), Dillsburg 1872-1873), New Kingston (1873-1875), New Chester (1875-1879) and East Berlin (1879-1888). He preached 8,760 sermons. He married (2) Mrs. Caroline Williams in 1874. He married (3) Sarah Diehl. Daniel and Frances had five children: Martha Jane Sell Seibert, John Alexander Sell, Edward Henry Sell, Infant Sell and Anna Maria Riggs. Inscription

While his tombstone gives his birth year as 1820, he was baptized in November 1819 in St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Newville, PA. A biographical sketch in the History of Gettysburg Seminary also states that he was born in 1819.
