JOSEPH C. BARHORST (aka Carl Joseph Barhorst) is said to have been the son of Carl Anton Barhorst and Maria Elisabeth Freking.

Joseph's first wife has been given as Anna Maria Schulz, who he is said to have married 27 May 1862, and who died in 1880.

Joseph then married 23 November 1880 to his second wife, Elisebeth/Elisabeth/Elizabeth (Strukamp) Lindhaus, widow of Henry Lindhaus. In 1870 Joseph and "Mary" resided in McLean Township, Shelby County, Ohio and had 3 children at home. The 1880 Census shows Joseph as a widower with 7 children, and there is no 1890 census. By the 1900 Census Joseph still resided in McLean Township with his second wife, "Lizzie" and six Barhorst children and one of her two children by Lindhaus. In 1910 Joseph was enumerated as Joseph Berhorst with wife, Elizabeth Berhorst, and four Berhorst children.

The 1920 Census recorded Joseph Barhorst Sr. and wife, Elizabeth, and two sons (Albert, single and William married to Rosa). William and Rosa apparently had the three young children residing in the the home in McLean Township, Shelby County, Ohio. [ASH]
