Reuben's father, John Tennison [later changed to Dennis], was born in Charles County Maryland. Reuben's mother was Elizabeth Cheatwood Dennis. Reuben's father died when he was but 8 years old. His mother then married Edmund Lyons ca 1809. About 1811 the Lyons began moving westward to Overton County, Tennessee.

Reuben married Susanna Susan Arnett in 1830 in Overton County, Tennessee. Susannah's father, John Arnett, also moved his family to Morgan County, Illinois along with the young Dennis's. Reuben is using the name Dennis as
early as 1830.

Reuben and Susanna moved into Morgan County IL before the 1830 census, and settled in to work the land.

Reuben and Susannah had 12 children in all.

They were neighbors of the Watemon Jones family, on whose land they are buried in the Jones family cemetery.

"Waverly: On Friday night, Reuben Dennis, Sr., whose serious illness we spoke of last week, breathed his last. He was born in February, 1800 and was consequently 83 years old. He had many relatives in this neighborhood, though his brothers and sisters have long since passed away.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. K. Miller, at the residence, Sunday morning at nine o'clock and the remains interred at the Jones Cemetery, six miles west of here. W. H. McCullough and wife, of Jacksonville were present, the deceased being Mrs. McCullough's father. A number of sons and daughters of the deceased reside here or in this vicinity."
