Joseph Hatke was born at Bragel, Oldenberg, Germany. His father was Gerhard Henrich Hartke, born 30 Dec 1783 at Ehrendorf, Oldenberg, Germany, died 19 Dec 1843 at Bragel, Oldenberg, Germany. Joseph's mother was Maria Gertrud Busse born 26 Jan 1790 at Brägel, Oldenberg, Germany, died 17 Jan 1857 at Teutopolis, Effingham Co., Illinois.

Joseph Hatke emmigrated from Germany in 1837. He left the Port of Bremen, Germany on the Ship Augusta and Mcline and arrived at the Port of New Orleans, Louisiana on November 10, 1837. His last residence is listed as Lohne, Germany. From New Orleans he traveled up the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers to Cincinnati, Ohio.

The Anton Deters family of five was also traveling from Lohne to Cincinnati with Joseph Hatke. Anton's wife, Catherine is Joseph's aunt. [Maria Catherina Hartke was born on May 20, 1791 and married Anton Deters on January 17, 1814. She is a sister of Gerhard Henrich Hartke, Joseph's father.]

When Joseph Hartke came to America he dropped the r from his surname and went by Hatke.

Joseph Hatke married Maria Anna Feldmann on April 16, 1844 by Rev. Jos. Ferneding at Old St. Mary's Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. Their witnesses were Joseph Peters and Teresia Hagemann.

Joseph and Maria Anna Hatke's first child, Maria Bernardina Clementina Hatke was born on the 14th of July 1845 in Cincinnati. Their second child, Josephine Anna Hatke was born August 30, 1847 at Teutopolis, Effingham Co., Illinois. From this we know that the Hatke family moved from Cincinnati to Teutopolis in about 1846.
