Mathias Gottschalk Pioneer Farmer Dies.
Mathias Gottschalk, one of Pipe Creek township's most respected farmers, died at his home west of Bunker Hill Tuesday morning about 8 o'clock. Deceased had been in failing health for some time although he was only taken to his bed about ten days before his death.

He had lived in the same vicinity for the past fifty-five years and was known as a good neighbor and close hard working farmer and a good Christian member of the Baptist church. He was past 80 years of age and was born in Nottingham township in Wells county.

The surviving members of his family are four children, two daughters, Minnie and Cora at home and two sons Ora and Harry living west of Bunker Hill and a brother Andrew and a sister Amanda Gottschalk of Berne. His wife preceded him in death last May.

The funeral services will be held today at 2 o'clock at the home, conducted by Rev. Clark of Indianapolis and burial in the Springdale cemetery west of Bunker Hill.

Matthias, son of Jacob and Christina Gottschalk was born in Nottingham Township, Wells Co., Indiana on September 24, 1848.

On March 19, 1867 he came to Pipe Creek Township Miami Co., Indiana. Here he established his home and has since remained.

He was united in marriage October 26, 1871 to Eliza J. Baker who preceded him in death about 8 months.

Of this union there were five children four of whom are living. The living children are Misses Minnie and Cora Gottschalk and Ora and Harry Gottschalk all living at and about the old homestead. There are also eight grandchildren six of whom are living.

Mr. Gottschalk was a life long member of the Baptist church and together with his good wife sought according to the light given to him to bring p his children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

He fell asleep on Tuesday January 15th 1929 at the age of 80 years, 3 months and 21 days.

Besides the relatives mentioned Mr. Gottschalk leaves one brother Andrew and one sister Amanda Gottschalk both of Berne, Ind. as well as a great number of other relatives and friends.
