Obit: DOG AND BROTHER OF BOY KEEP VIGIL TOGETHER AT GRAVE

EAST PETERSBURG, Pa
April 6 1951 (St. Louis Post Dispatch)

A brown mongrel pup and a three-year-old boy -- two lonesome survivors of a grade crossing accident wiped out the rest of the boys family -- played a pathetic drama today at the grave of the accident victims.

Brownie, which looked like a collie, has maintained a constant vigil at the grave for 11 days -- ever since the burial of its four year old master, David Siegrist, and the boys parents.

David, his mother and father, and a neighbor were killed two weeks ago when their automobile was struck by a freight train. Paul Siegrist, 3, and the dog were the only suvivors.

Only a few weeks before the accident, Paul's own dog -- Brownie's companion -- was killed by an automobile.

Paul and Brownie were taken to the home of his grandparents. Brownie followed the funeral cortege of the accident victims to the cemetery, and after the burial refused to leave the grave of his young master.

Paul was brought to the cemetery to try and coax the dog away, but Brownie ignores him, refuses to leave, and eats only when the food is placed at the side of the grave.

So Paul is keeping a vigil with Brownie in an effort to win the dog's devotion.
