Irene Elscott was the sixth child born to John and Maggie Brand Elscott on February 16, 1927 near Taintor, Iowa. On October 10, 1950, she was united in marriage with Chadwick Lee Ver Ploeg at the First Reformed Church in Sully, Iowa. To this union, five children were born: a son who died in infancy, Doyle Jay, Diane Sue, Darla Jean, and Duane Dean. Those left to cherish her memory are her four children and their spouses, along with 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Doyle and Karna Ver Ploeg of Lynnville: Kristen and Jeremy Van Donselaar and children Courtney, Trisha, Leah and Bethany and Dustin and Angela Ver Ploeg and son, Isaac. Diane and Steve Vos of Pella: Mark and Angela Vos and children, Kyra, Haley, Isabella and Claire and Michelle and Fred Sylvia. Darla and Ed Merwald of Marshalltown: Mike and Missy Merwald. Duane and Myrna Ver Ploeg of Sully: Kelsi and Jenna Ver Ploeg. Irene leaves her 3 sisters: Jennie (Harold) Guerts, Ellen (Francis) Van Zante, and Grace (John) Renaud; her sister-in-law, Verna (Glen) Elscott all of Pella and her brother-in-law, James Renaud of Sully. Of her husband's family, Irene leaves the following brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Dick Junior and Joyce Ver Ploeg of Sully,and Wendell and Irma Ver Ploeg of West Bloomfield, Michigan. Irene was preceded in death by her infant son who died in 1951; her parents; her sister, Gladys Renaud; her two brothers, Elmer and Glen; her brothers-in-law, Harold Geurts, Franics Van Zante and John H. Renaud.


Irene attended the Case Country Grade School. She was a devoted homemaker and enjoyed taking care of their home. She will be remembered for many things, but in particular for her special orange drink and chocolate no- bake cookies. Mowing the lawn, putting puzzles together, writing poems about her family, and traveling to craft shows with her daughters were some of her favorite pasttimes. Her children and their families were very important to her. Irene was a longtime member of First Reformed Church of Sully where she taught Sunday School for 13 years. After moving to Pella, she became a member of Third Reformed Church.


Memorials may be given for the Primary Sunday School Department of the First Reformed Church in Sully, Iowa, or the Hospice of Pella Comfort House in Pella, Iowa.
