John Schabel Chilton Times March 14, 1914

The sudden and unexpected death of John Schabel which occurred shortly after five o'clock on Thursday afternoon, March 5th, at his home on Pennsylvania Avenue, and of which a brief mention was made in the last issue, was a great shock not only to this family but also to the city who have known Mr. Schabel intimately for nearly forty years. His life was an active and energetic one.
He was born at Rasdorf, Germany, Nov. 24, 1839. In 1856 he came to America and shortly after located at Plymouth where he became an apprentice at the carpenter trade. He worked at his trade in that city and in the town of Marshfield, Fond du Lac County, and on Jan. 12, 1869 was united in marriage with Margaret Wicklein at the Catholic Church in St. Cloud.

They remained there until about 1874 when they moved to this city and purchased a home on School Street, a few lots east of where the high school building now stands, remaining there until some twenty-one years ago when they erected a home at the Center. Mr. Schabel was a good mechanic and found steady employment with the leading contractors of the city. He also did considerable contracting on his own account, always giving the best of satisfaction to those who employed him. In the winter time when work at his trade was slack he would turn his hand to mill-wrighting or assist some of the local wagon-makers at their trade. He was not afraid of hard work and did his full share of it.

By nature he was a genial companion and he knew how to make and retain friends. In 1878-79 he was street commissioner of the city and his work gave good satisfaction. Last November he complained frequently of dizziness and was unable to work for a short time though he always felt better when doing something.

On the morning previous to his death he carried his tools under his arm and walked two miles south of the city to the home of his son-in-law, John Kautzer, where he did some carpenter work, walking to his home after dinner on the following day. Thursday forenoon he worked at Mike Meier's wagon shop and shortly before noon left for his home. He complained to his wife of a headache and refusing to eat dinner went to his bed. At five o'clock Mrs. Schabel called him for supper and he said he felt better. He got up and both he and his wife walked out to the house to complete some chores for the day. He entered the home first, lighted his pipe and sat down in his accustomed place to enjoy a smoke. Five minutes later when his wife returned she found him dead. Death was due to heart failure and dropsy.

He is survived by a widow, three sons, John, in the west, A. W. of Marquette, Mich., C. A. of Detroit, and six daughters, Mrs. J. E. Esser, Mrs. E. Zeidler, Miss Helen of Chicago, Mrs. N. R. Feltes of Detroit, Mich., Mrs. John Kautzer of Chilton Town and Miss Matilda at home, all of whom were in attendance at the funeral except John, who could not be reached by telegram.
