Hendrik Kuneman was born on March 11, 1875, in Utrecht, the son of Hendrik Kuneman and Johanna Knebel. His father served in various positions in the Dutch East Indies, ultimately becoming the Governor of Java. At the age of 12, Hendrik was sent to Leiden in 1886 to receive a proper education since it was not readily available in the Dutch East Indies. Tragically, on Thursday, December 8, 1887, he passed away in Leiden while living in the house of the Lutheran minister and teacher, Eugenius Cesar Segers. His parents were in Batavia in the Dutch East Indies (nowadays Jakarta, Indonesia) at the time, where his father was occupied with his official duties. Hendrik's grave, located in the Groenesteeg cemetery, is adorned with a beautiful angel statue and is one of the most photographed graves in the cemetery. Despite his short life, Hendrik's family's legacy extends far and wide, with various members achieving notable careers and accomplishments both in the Netherlands and in the Dutch East Indies.
