Wellington Stevens, known as "Buzz" Stevens, passed away Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009 at his home in Katy, Texas. He was 74 years old.
Mr. Stevens was born in Hart, Mich. Feb. 7, 1935. He graduated from Hart High School, Class of 1953. A star athlete in basketball, football and baseball, Buzz went on to attend the University of Michigan where he played football for his beloved Wolverines. He also attended the University of Houston, where he met his first wife, Doris Amelang, with whom he had three children.
Mr. Stevens' professional career began in 1959 when he co-founded Pan American Engineering Co. in Vero Beach, Fla., with his father, Red Stevens. He owned and operated the company until his retirement in 2006. Mr. Stevens was also the proprietor of West Michigan Engineering and West Michigan Land Co. in Hart.
In late 2008, Mr. Stevens relocated from Vero Beach to Katy, Texas where he enjoyed the company of his three children and five grandchildren, participating in many family events and holiday gatherings. Throughout his life, Buzz frequently returned to Hart for business and to visit family. He also maintained a home in Pentwater.
Mr. Stevens was predeceased by his parents, Wellington "Red" and Lillian Stevens.
He was survived by his wife, Judith Stevens. He was also survived by his children, Wellington "Rocky" Stevens III, Diedre Stevens Hubscher, and Laura Elaine Stevens; his five grandchildren, Katerina Wellington Stevens, Arianna Wellington Stevens, Miles Stevens Hubscher, Jayne Jules Hubscher and Brooke Elliott Mickle; his sister, Beverly Joan Broemer; and two stepchildren, John "Jack" Welton and James Welton.
Buzz was known for his lively sense of humor, dry wit and caring nature, and he was dearly loved by his family and friends.
