Funeral services for Emelia Schlecht, 95, Wishek, were held Thursday, January 8, 2004, at First United Church of Christ, Gackle, with Rev. Bob Wittstruck, officiating. She died Jan. 4 at Wishek Community Hospital.

Emelia Sommerfeld was born Dec. 8, 1908 in Stutsman County, the daughter of Daniel Sommerfeld and Lydia (Kriel) Sommerfeld. She received her elementary education in the local rural school and grew to womanhood in the vicinity where she helped on the family farm.

Emelia married Henry Geohring on July 15, 1926 in Jamestown. They made their home on a farm, northeast of Gackle, in Stutsman County, where they lived until 1948, when they retired and moved into Gackle. Following the death of her husband on Nov. 3, 1950, she continued to reside in Gackle.

Emeila married Jacob Schlecht on March 31, 1957 in Jamestown. They lived on his farm until Oct. 1, 1976 when they moved into Kulm, where they built a new home for their retirement. In 1992 they moved to Wishek. Following the death of Jacob on Jan. 11, 2000, Emeila continued to live in Wishek.

Emeila was a member of the Congregational Church in Gackle, where she was baptized and confirmed. She later became a member of the Congregational Church in Kulm. She also was a member of the Senior Citizens.

Surviving are her children, Violet Diede, Gackle, Burnie (Donna) Geohring, Bismarck, Lois (Elmer) Schlecht, Gackle, Larry Geohring, Ithaca, N.Y.; her stepchildren, Norbert (Belle) Schlecht, Bedford, N. H., Marilyn (Carl) Harbuck, Bullhead City, Ariz., Arlie (Norma) Schlecht, Hutchinson, Minn., Dorothy (Richard) Nelson, Lovell, Wyo., Larry (Jeanne) Schlecht, Omaha, Neb., nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren, 14 step-grandchildren, 33 step-great grandchildren, one step-great-great-grandchild; a brother and a sister, Jacob Sommerfeld, Longview, Wash., and Edna Bloomquist, Escalon, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, a son, two brothers and a great-grandson.

Interment was in the Gackle City Cemetery. Haut Funeral Homes of Gackle was in charge of arrangements.
