Peter and Susanna Maria (Stauffer) Balmer were the parents of thirteen children, eight of them born in Wayne County (Ohio): Elizabeth, John, Christian, Peter, Abraham, Jacob, Benjamin, and David. After moving to Richland Twp., Allen Co., Ohio, five more children were born: Marianna, Elias, Anna, Philip and Samuel. According to the "History of Allen County", published in 1882, all of the children lived to adulthood except one.
One day Peter Balmer went to Shannon (now Bluffton) for a load of lumber driving a team of oxen. Coming home with the wagon loaded, the team became frightened and ran, causing Peter to fall off the wagon to his death. Mary Ann died July 10, 1879 and is buried at Emmanuel Reformed Cemetery.
