John Devie Jr., 93, of Sterling, died Sunday Nov. 23, 2003, in Sterling. Visitation will be Tuesday, Nov. 24 from 10a.m. to 7p.m. at Tennant Funeral Home, with vigil and rosary to follow at 7 pm Mass and christian Burial will be Wed Nov. 25th at 10 a.m. at St Catholic Church with Rev. Jim Baird officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Devie was born July l,1910,in Lapowe, Russia, to John Devie Sr. and Katherine (Dietz) Devie.The family moved to the United States when Mr. Devie was 1 1/2-years old, arriving with his mother and 3-year-old sister in
Galveston, Texas. He became a U.S. citizen in July 1940 in Sterling.Over the years, the family lived in Ovid; Brighton; Chicago;and Akron and Perryburg, Ohio,where Mr. Devie graduated from the eighth grade at S. Rose DeLima Catholic School.The family then purchased afarm in Crook, where Mr. Devie
met and married Mary Hershfeldt on Feb. .12, 1935. A two-night and three-day German wedding polka dance was held at Red Lion,Colo.
The couple farmed in the Crook area for 43 years until they retired in 1978 and moved to Sterling, where Mr. Devie resided until his death.
He enjoyed golfing, reading,watching sports, and playing the harmonica and the guitar,which he learned to play by ear. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church.
He is survived by wife Mary Devie, of Sterling; sons Richard Devie and wife Joanne, of Crook, William and wife Dora of Sedgwick, and James Devie and wife Patty of Crook, daughters Irene Mansuetti and husband Chuck, of Akron, Frances Lane and husband Henry, of Cheyenne, Wyo., Vonna Koehler, of Golden, and Lorraine Snow and husband Jo, of Arvada; sister Irene Kippe of Denver; 17 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by daughter Romona; son-in-law Wayne Koehler; three brothers; and six sisters.
Memorials may be made to St.Anthony Catholic School, St.Anthony's furnace fund, or Masses in his name, care of Tennant Funeral Home, Sterling, CO 80751.
