Irene M. Ghys, 89, a resident of Hammond-Henry Hospital Extended Care Unit, Geneseo, formerly of Atkinson, passed away Sunday, September 27, 2009 at the Unit. A Funeral Mass celebrating her life will be held 10:00 am Thursday, October 1st at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Atkinson. Rev. Gerard Verhoye will celebrate. Burial will be in the St. Anthony's Cemetery, Atkinson. Family and friends of Irene may call from 5:00 – 8:00 pm Wednesday at Vandemore Funeral Home, Atkinson; where a Rosary will be recited at 4:30 pm. Memorials may be left to the Irene Ghys Memorial Fund to be distributed to local organizations.
Irene was born on July 28, 1920 in Atkinson, the daughter of Edward and Mathide (Van De Putte) Lippens. She was a graduate of Atkinson High School. Irene was united in marriage to Alphonse F. Ghys June 9, 1940 in Atkinson; he preceded her in death in 1995. She assisted her husband in farming in Cornwall and Munson Townships for many years. Irene was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society of the church, and Mothers of WWII. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, and cooking.
Survivors include two daughters and spouse Sharon and Richard VanWynsberghe, Geneseo; Marie and Tim Weber, Osco; two sons and spouses Richard and Mary Ghys, Geneseo; Francis and Sharon Ghys, East Moline; 11 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and five step grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two grandsons Jim Weber, Ricky Ghys, two brothers, an infant brother and two sisters.
