Garrettsville village was first settled by John Garrett, from Christiana Hundred, Delaware, early in July 1804. Accompanying him was his wife Eleanor, and children, David J., John, Elisha, Elizabeth and Josiah and also Abraham Dyson and his family. Following their arrival they were encamped for several weeks where the pavement of Main street now is, and busied themselves erecting a cabin. They were located in the midst of an undisturbed forest, with few hands to do work, yet early in the following year, they built a dam across Silver Creek and had a saw mill in operation, soon followed by a grist mill. John was a miller. and a man of energy and courage. (some excerpts are taken from 'The History of Garrettsville' by S. M. Luther)

At the time of John's death, he was buried on the knoll north of the mills. Today the area is located in the Baptist Cemetery.

"The Baptist Church was built in 1832 on the knoll of the cemetery." John Garrett's heirs had deeded the land of the cemetery and church to the Governor of the State of Ohio for the use of the Baptist Society on 22 Feb 1825.
