Mary Elizabeth Stehle Rockenstein, 89, of Howey In The Hills, Fla., formerly of Butler, died Monday at Avante Nursing Home in Leesburg, Fla.
Born March 24, 1914, in Butler, she was a daughter of Joseph T. Sr. and Olive Nancy Atwell Stehle.
A graduate of Butler High School and Robert Morris Business School, she had been an executive secretary for Bantam Car Co. during the 1930s. She moved from Butler in 1977 and lived in several states with her daughter and family.
She was a member of St. Peter Roman Catholic Church and the Women's Council of the church. She formerly belonged to the Butler Junior Women's Club, the Butler Garden Club, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Wives Club of the Butler County and Pennsylvania bar associations. She had served as a board member for the Butler Library Association and also Red Cross of Butler. She also had worked on antique shows in the Butler area.
Mrs. Rockenstein was known for making beautiful handmade Christmas stockings and hand-painted Easter eggs for her family, along with all of her families' doll clothes.
Surviving are a son, Joseph Rockenstein of Sylva, N.C.; two daughters, Mrs. John (Nancy) Roth of Howey In The Hills and Mrs. Jeffery (Ann) McGeary of Wheeling, W.Va.; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A brother, Raymond D. Stehle of Butler; and two sisters, Mrs. Catherine Dillon of California, Md., and Mrs. Keith (Ann) Hope of Hilton Head, S.C., also survive.
A son preceded her in death.
ROCKENSTEIN - Friends of Mary Elizabeth Rockenstein, who died Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, will be received from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at GEIBEL FUNERAL HOME, 201 E. Cunningham St. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at noon Saturday at St. Peter Roman Catholic Church, 127 Franklin St. Burial will be at St. Peter Parish Cemetery.
The Women's Council of St. Peter will recite the rosary at 11:40 a.m. Saturday at the church.
